OHIO SPCA REMOVES NEARLY 100 ANIMALS (HARRISON COUNTY, OHIO) - On February 12, 2014, the Ohio SPCA Response Team was called in to remove approximately 100 animals from a property at the request of the HSUS, the Harrison County Dog Warden and the Sheriff's Department. After a warrant was executed, the owner surrendered the animals to the Ohio SPCA. This is a legally binding surrender, and now the animals can go to new homes.Of the nearly 100 animals removed, 91 were dogs. Members of the Ohio SPCA Response Team collected evidence and photographed each animal and their environment. All documentation is now in the hands of the authorities, so charges can be filed. While the owner claimed to be a rescue haven for animals, this was clearly a hoarding situation. The Ohio SPCA understands that there are emotional issues involved here with the owner and his son, however at the same time animal cruelty was evident. It is not our intention to humiliate this man in the news or through social media. As in all "rescues" that go bad, good intentions are not enough to excuse animal neglect or suffering. Animal hoarders are broken people, therefore compassion combined with firm legal action are required. Through removing the animals, we hope that this man can now receive the help he needs through the court system. It is easy to judge and sometimes hard to understand. The desired outcome has been accomplished - the animals are now safe in no-kill rescues and shelters.
