On Monday, August 29, Toyota West in Columbus, Ohio presented the Ohio SPCA with our new 2011 Toyota Tundra! The Ohio SPCA was selected as a finalist in the 100 Cars for Good Program. On May 15, 2011 we competed against against four other organizations on Facebook and won!

A pickup truck has been on the Ohio SPCA’s Farm Sanctuary wish list for many years. Receiving a brand new Toyota Tundra is a dream come true. The Toyota Tundra will be a lifeline for so many animals in need and will make farm work so much easier for volunteers. The excitement and anticipation had been building for months and now the wait is over. The truck has already been used many times for transporting hay, lumber, and animals in need of rescue or veterinary care.

Thank you, Jeremy Francis (Toyota West General Manager) and Associates. The bed liner you added will protect our new truck bed!

Facebook friends – We couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you for voting for the Ohio SPCA and for your continued support.

We have an URGENT need. A 12 x 20 mini barn must be delivered and dropped into the new goat pasture. This will allow the special needs goats to remain with the herd. Our main goat barn is 500 feet up a hill and is at full capacity with 39 goats and sheep. The mini barn will be dropped in the pasture close to the farmhouse and at the bottom of the driveway to the main barn. Location of the mini barn will allow us close access to these animals, so we can easily provide for their special needs. The special needs goats are currently housed in a cement floor building which must be thickly lined with straw and is difficult to clean out. If these goats do not join the herd, they will not have the benefit of a secure pasture which will be electrified against predators. The new pasture will be finished by Friday, August 27, so the new mini barn must be ordered as soon as possible. Our goal is $2,200. Please donate what you can through the ChipIn link, Paypal, or snail mail.

http://ohiospca.chipin.com/ohio-spca

Our ultimate goal is a new 40 x 60 barn near the farmhouse. Until we build a new barn, intake of new animals in need is severely restricted.

Getting Ready for New Fence

On Saturday, August 21, OSU Vet Students and Ohio SPCA volunteers worked all day in order to prepare the farm sanctuary for new lines of fence. They removed hundreds of feet of old fence and bush hogged fence lines. Additionally, they hauled all old fence, gates, and posts off the property. 4100 feet of new fence and 12 gates will be installed starting August 23. We love these students and volunteers. They worked so hard to help the animals. Thank you! You guys rock!

Hay is like gold on the Ohio SPCA Farm Animal Sanctuary. Before farmers sell all of their hay, we must secure the delivery of 900 bales for the coming winter. This amounts to a whopping $2,700.00. Please consider giving to this most critical need.

Monetary donations can be submitted through Paypal or checks payable to the Ohio SPCA sent to P.O. Box 546, Grove City, Ohio 43123. Donations of grass hay, alfalfa, or straw are welcome. All donations are tax-deductible.

Update: A huge thank you to those who have donated a total of $900.00 towards the purchase of hay for the farm animals. We still need $1,800.00 to make it through the winter. 600 bales of hay must still be purchased.

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio

A dog fights to stay alive, but the organization that saved his life once, now needs help to save it again.

In fact the well being of more than one hundred other animals is also on the line. Funding has dwindled down to nothing at the Ohio SPCA. The executive director says the organization won’t be able to care for the animals at the sanctuary or take new animals in. One special life is in jeopardy. Buddy is the poster dog of the Ohio SPCA, his rescue launched the organization.

Teresa Landon, the Exec. Ohio SPCA says, “We actually rescued buddy 20 minutes before he was to be shoved into a gas chamber.”

Buddy now limps on three legs after bone cancer forced an amputation. He needs chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from spreading, but right now the Ohio SPCA can’t afford the treatment.

You can help save buddy and the other animals by logging on to our website keyword Ohio SPCA.

When you donate be sure the money is going specifically to the Ohio SPCA, and not to another SPCA group.

Saturday, September 29, 2007 4:00 AM
By Holly Zachariah
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Teresa Landon tends goats on a Pickaway County farm where the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals keeps rescued animals. The group has just 14 bales of hay to last the winter.

Teresa Landon tends goats on a Pickaway County farm where the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals keeps rescued animals. The group has just 14 bales of hay to last the winter. Elvis doesn’t look or act, or especially smell, very friendly or inviting right now.

He’s a goat who seeks a mate, and so do most of his 30 friends on the Pickaway County farm. That means that the animals pretty much have slathered themselves with their own urine for rutting season. Apparently, the doe finds this attractive.

But no matter how gross they might look or smell, the goats still have to eat. And that’s what concerns Teresa Landon. She is volunteer director of the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and right now she finds herself with 14 bales of hay to last the animals at the organization’s sanctuary through the winter.

A Pickaway County farmer, whom Landon wouldn’t name, cut nearly 30 acres of hay on the private farm where the society keeps its animals, just north of Circleville, in June. He was supposed to leave most of the hay for the society. Instead, Landon said, he left behind scrub and took the good stuff for himself.

A bad season prevented a second cutting.

“Now, we’ve stopped taking in any more rescued animals and we won’t know beyond the next week how I’ll feed the ones we have,” she said. She has tried to get more hay from other sources, but Ohio, like many states, is in a hay crisis and she can’t find any the group can afford.

She estimates the organization needs 900 to 1,000 bales to get the goats, two horses and a sick cow named Duncan through the winter.

The goats, she said, are especially problematic because they have special health needs and a changing hay supply isn’t good for them.

But at least there are fewer goats than before. Elvis and his buddies were part of a sickly herd of more than 220 that authorities seized from a condemned Scioto County farm in 2005.

Ohio officials also found at least 80 carcasses on the property of Christopher Weathersbee back then, including one in the house and several in a freezer, according to an Associated Press article.

Weathersbee eventually was convicted of animal-cruelty charges, but animal-welfare advocates were left to deal with the fallout. Many of the goats were adopted, but Elvis and his friends remain.

Now, Landon is moving them about the pasture in hopes of getting them through the winter.

“They’ve already escaped one bad fate,” Landon said. “I can’t let them starve to death now.”

The Ohio SPCA had two urgent holiday season wishes. One was for heat in the animal sanctuary farmhouse and the other for a used vehicle for animal transport. With a furnace beyond repair and donations low, the Ohio SPCA reached out for help. Two days before Thanksgiving, the blessing of warmth was bestowed upon us by two very caring and generous men, Bran Silveous and Chris Rollins, partners in 4 Seasons Air located in Centerburg, Ohio.

Bran and Chris traveled all the way from Knox County to the Pickaway County farm sanctuary and installed a new Trane heating and cooling system in the bitter cold on Tuesday November 25. Trane donated the furnace and Bran and Chris installed everything free of charge, thus saving the Ohio SPCA thousands of dollars.

We all know that this is the time of the year to give to others. These two gentlemen have truly demonstrated the giving spirit – helping animals and the volunteers of the Ohio SPCA. We can’t thank them enough. May the blessing they bestowed upon us come back tenfold to their families!

A huge thank you to 4 Seasons Air and Trane!

On May 13, 2007, eight students from the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association spent an entire day at the farm sanctuary vaccinating, worming, an providing hoof care to our goats.

On April 12, 2008, another group of vet students once again made a “farm call.” These young men and women provide an invaluable service to the Ohio SPCA by donating their time and by helping to keep the sanctuary residents healthy. We are very grateful for their visits.

Sweet Pea arrived full of lice and with a leg that had been broken and never repaired. She now needs expensive surgery to repair the leg before she gets any older. Funds are needed for this surgery which will be done at the OSU Veterinary Hospital in Columbus.

Angel, a sweet small white goat, will forever live with damage resulting from neglect. When she came to us, her hooves were grossly overgrown and she had been walking on her knees for a very long time. Her knees will never be normal and she still wants to graze while on her knees. Due to long-term neglect, Angel walks slower than normal and raises her legs abnormally high. Additionally, she has what is called a parrot mouth. Her upper jaw extends beyond the lower jaw. Volunteers continue to treat her skin issues which have resulted in loss of fur. Despite her handicaps, Angel is thriving at the farm sanctuary. Both Sweet Pea and Angel have become favorites on the farm. Their rehabilitation continues.

Please consider making a donation towards their care and Sweet Pea’s surgery. Donations may be made through PayPal or by mail

Donate now to help Buddy!

Buddy, our poster dog, was diagnosed with canine osteosarcoma on Tuesday, April 28. On April 29, his right front leg was amputated and he must now receive chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from traveling throughout his body.

Buddy is special (aren’t they all?) and loved by many. He was the dog that launched our efforts to make a difference in Ohio’s county pounds. Rescued just 20 minutes before being shoved into a gas chamber, 18 other dogs that day were not. We had to fight just to get this one dog released to us.

Since that day, the Ohio SPCA has been investigating county dog shelters. We have been successful in halting the use of engine exhaust, gas boxes, gas chambers, and bullets to end the lives of homeless dogs. Our work must continue as we have many rural county pounds that continue to function as nothing more than catch and kill facilities. We are currently working to end the use of gas chambers in numerous counties.

Do to the current economy, our funds are dangerously low and Buddy’s treatment is beyond our current ability to pay. Additionally, we are now being forced to turn animals away until we are back on our feet again. The Ohio SPCA operates a 40-acre farm animal sanctuary. The farm is home to over a hundred formerly abused and abandoned animals. Medical care, feed, and shelter must be provided for Buddy and the other animals in our care.

Buddy has been released from OSU Vet Hospital. He will return on May 11 to start chemotherapy. We saved his life once. We would like to do it again.

Update:

Thanks to the generous support of a caring public, Buddy received his first chemotherapy treatment on May 11. He has totally recovered from surgery and is the fastest dog we’ve ever seen on three legs. He is full of life. Buddy’s chemotherapy treatment ended on July 13, 2009. Those who love Buddy pray that the cancer did not spread to his lungs prior to surgery. We would like to say “thank you” to each person who donated so Buddy could be helped.

Funding for the Farm Sanctuary is still at an emergency level.
