CANINE CRUSADERS

The Scioto County Dog Pound is improving the way it does business Fido and Scruffy now have beds, a place to hang out outside, and hopes of being connected to one of thousands of dog rescue groups across the country. These are just a few of the recent improvements made to the Scioto County Dog Pound that are making lives more enjoyable for pets and their future families.
The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals worked with the Scioto County Commissioners to secure funds for a number of improvements. Perhaps the pound's greatest enhancement came in April, when it began getting internet service and a website used for pet adoption, www.petfinder.com.
Pictures and descriptions of dogs at the Scioto County Pound can be viewed on the site in order for owners to locate their lost pets or for individuals and rescue groups to adopt them.
Volunteers transport the adopted dogs to Columbus where they are picked up by other volunteers and taken to their final rescue group. Portsmouth resident Cricket Shields has been a volunteer dog transporter for three months, taking rescued dogs from Scioto County to Reynoldsburg near Columbus.
"You got to love animals," said Shields. "They need a chance too." Shields says, although her route ends in Reynoldsburg, she is always prepared to take the dogs further than that. Sometimes, the volunteer that has arranged to take the dogs on from there has a full load and Shields takes the dog to its final destination, occaisionally going as far as Indiana. Dogs from the Scioto County Dog Pound have been rescued by groups as far away as Pittsburgh, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Minnesota. Shields' volunteer work turned into C.A.R.T., Cricket's Animal Rescue and Transport.
"About one year ago, we had to put down about 200 dogs a month," said Pam Frowine, pound administrator.

Outdoor runs are being constructed. This will put an end to animals being hosed down when their kennels are cleaned.
Indoor kennels will be modified to add two feet of brick at ground level to help prevent the spread of disease. Best of all ..... the gas chamber will soon be a thing of the past. In the very near future, lethal injection will be used thus giving those that could not be saved, a dignified and peaceful death.
Paws Applause for the Scioto County Commissioners!

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!
The Scioto County Commissioners have approved a new policy for the Scioto County Dog Shelter starting April 1, 2004. All dogs will be spayed or neutered before being released to an adoptive family. To cover the cost of the surgery, adoption fees will be increased from $15.00 to $60.00. Local veterinarians, including Dr. Gail Counts with Shawnee Animal Clinic, will be assisting the Commissioners in implementing this program.
The shelter will continue to work with reputable and approved rescues as before. Rescues will be required to purchase a Scioto County Dog License and provide their 501c3 IRS tax letter. OHEA recommends that rescues also provide the shelter with copies of their adoption application and adoption contract. OHEA applauds the Scioto County Commissioners for taking this critical step in order to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless animals in Scioto County. Let's hope that other county shelters without such a policy will take notice and follow this county's example! You may write, fax, or e-mail the Scioto County Commissioners to thank them for this very important policy change.
