Horse Rescue

Horse Abuse and Neglect in Ohio,

Many horses all over Ohio need help. Without sufficient funding, the Ohio SPCA can’t continue to rescue them.
These are just a few examples of horses found in need. Unfortunately, some of the cases didn’t have a happy ending. We need the support of horse lovers everywhere in order to continue to help these wonderful creatures. We need monetary donations as well as donations of hay, straw. and grain.

Our emergency medical funds have been depleted.

Monty & Peanut

UPDATE on Peanut: Peanut has been adopted by his foster mom and dad. This once very frightened little boy now offers his nose for kisses and approaches humans in the pasture. As far as he’s concerned, most humans are his friends, and he will nuzzle for a treat. Peanut also had his feet trimmed for the first time and he was perfect for the farrier! He halters like a pro, and his foster mom, Mary, will soon be training him to tie safely. His behavior is as it should be for a very young colt, and Monty has helped to socialize him. His other big buddy is Rusty, a big sorrel boy, who plays with Monty and Peanut over the pasture fence. When Peanut’s foster dad, Del, leads him down from the pasture, and they pass Mary, Peanut plants his feet and is very insistent on getting his hug, rub and kiss from mom. Afterwards, he’ll go merrily into the barn for dinner. Monty and Peanut have come a very long way. Mary and Del, thank you for all the tender loving care you are giving these two special horses!

Monty

Monty was rescued from a southern Ohio horse dealer. He was 425 pounds underweight. His hooves were cracked and chipped and his ears were full of fly fungus. Monty also had an infected leg wound and a skin infection. It appears that he has been struck in the head as there is a small indention. However, this boy is a sweetheart and is currently recovering in a wonderful Ohio SPCA foster home. Mary and Del adopted Monty after they adopted Peanut. These two horse buddies will now remain together for the rest of their lives in a wonderful home!

Dusty was surrendered to a Scioto County Humane Agent (an Ohio SPCA volunteer). He was approximately 400 pounds underweight and his teeth needed to be filed down. This beautiful Palamino is now recovering in an Ohio SPCA foster home. A mare on the same property wasn’t so lucky. The owner stated that he couldn’t get a veterinarian to come to his property. Update: Dusty has a wonderful new forever home!
Scarlet
