Mr. Kitty’s Empty Counter

On December 3, we said goodbye (for now) to Mr. Kitty, a senior guy rescued from a hoarder in southern Ohio years ago where he was eating burned trash. At the approximate age of twenty, his kidneys failed. Mr. Kitty “owned” the sanctuary farmhouse kitchen counter, and there is an empty spot there now. He is still loved and will be missed. I wish we could save them all, thus giving them a full life like Mr. Kitty finally had in his later years.

A Valiant Battle Lost

Sometimes a battle is not won. On October 15, the Ohio SPCA lost Buddy, our poster dog, to Osteosarcoma. Despite his fight and our efforts to extend his life, the cancer won after six short months.

While playing in the yard, the femur in a hind leg snapped. X-rays showed that the bone had been weakened by cancer and that the cancer had spread to the lungs and ribs. Letting Buddy go was heartbreaking.

Buddy was rescued just 20 minutes before he would have been shoved into a gas chamber. We had to fight to get this dog released to us. His rescue set the course for our efforts to clean up inhumane dog pounds in Ohio. Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten. He is greatly missed on the farm sanctuary.

We want to thank again those who donated to Buddy’s treatment. He was full of life to the end. We swear he was the fastest dog ever on three legs!

Jasmine

After living the best two years of her life, Jasmine recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge during the night. This senior girl was loved and pampered by two wonderful sanctuary caregivers, Kevin and Megan. They loved her as their own and our heartfelt sympathies are with them. Thank you Kevin and Megan for loving this special canine during the last years of her life, for the many trips to the vet, and for providing the best in care which obviously gave Jasmine a longer life and a chance to be loved and spoiled.

Rosey

After years of neglect and being kept alive merely to produce foals for profit, this sweet mare could not be saved. Rosey’s front legs were twisted and deformed. Three OSU vets examined her. If one of her front legs had been close to normal, surgery might have worked. However, a previously untreated break in the ankle and severely overgrown hooves had resulted in abnormal bone change and destruction. Three Ohio SPCA volunteers remained with Rosie as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This gentle creature is no longer in pain.

Spirit

Spirit was a very special dalmation pup. He was comatose and dying when we got him. The owner had been dead for three days and the animals were in bad shape prior to that. Dead dogs were found on the property. All of Spirit’s litter mates were dead. Mom was so emaciated that she could not feed him. It was a miracle that he survived. He was like a little premature baby. As time past, Spirit was unable to combat his medical problems. We will forever remember him.

A poem written by Spirit’s foster mom:

I miss your constantly wagging tail,
I miss your eerie howling wail,
I miss your happy dancing feet…….

I miss your soft and silken ears,
I miss the laughter and the tears,
I miss the toys thrust at me…

let’s play, let’s play, let’s play.

I miss your nudging, begging nose

‘pay attention to me now

stop what you are doing for i am here, and
life is so short and dear. ‘
I miss your beautiful expressive eyes
full of orneriness, love and surprise, and in the end
the pain I couldn’t bear.

Dear Spirit our time together was so very short, but more precious than words can express for a few wonderful months, we thought your battle was won.

You were so very young………. and brave

You still will be making life’s trips with me, f irst to rest under your favorite tree and then at my life’s journey’s end, we will be together again, for eternity.

I will always love and cherish our time together.

Pepper

Paralyzed for three years (after apparently being struck by a car), Pepper would drag herself around on dirt and rocks in the hot sun. Chronic uncontrolled infection damaged and scarred Sweet Pepper’s renal system. Still on antibiotics and only out of the hospital for nine days, the kidney infection worsened. She stopped eating and started vomiting. Blood work showed that her already abnormal kidney values had increased. After all the years of improper care and then finally being saved, Sweet Pepper’s poor little body just couldn’t get well.

On September 23, 2003, one month after the Ohio SPCA rescued her, Sweet Pepper was held and helped across the Rainbow Bridge. For one month she was loved and spoiled, given nutritional food (and occasionally her favorite – Tim Horton’s plain Timbits) and provided soft clean bedding and stuffed toys. She will no longer suffer and once again she is running through the green meadows with those fur babies who have gone before her.

Sweet Sweet Pepper, you are still loved and missed.

Lady

On February 12, 2003, Lady crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The Lady Fund will continue in her name so that other special animals in need can be helped. We want to thank all of you who have contributed to The Lady Fund which helped provide medical care for this sweet girl . Lady continues to be loved and missed by her sanctuary care family.

On March 9, 2003, Teddy lost his battle with oral melanoma and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Teddy’s last two years were undoubtedly his best, for he had lived a life of neglect. Teddy continues to be loved and missed by his sanctuary care family.
