We have an URGENT need. A 12 x 20 mini barn must be delivered and dropped into the new goat pasture. This will allow the special needs goats to remain with the herd. Our main goat barn is 500 feet up a hill and is at full capacity with 39 goats and sheep. The mini barn will be dropped in the pasture close to the farmhouse and at the bottom of the driveway to the main barn. Location of the mini barn will allow us close access to these animals, so we can easily provide for their special needs. The special needs goats are currently housed in a cement floor building which must be thickly lined with straw and is difficult to clean out. If these goats do not join the herd, they will not have the benefit of a secure pasture which will be electrified against predators. The new pasture will be finished by Friday, August 27, so the new mini barn must be ordered as soon as possible. Our goal is $2,200. Our ultimate goal is a new 40 x 60 barn near the farmhouse. Until we build a new barn, intake of new animals in need is severely restricted.

On Saturday, August 21, OSU Vet Students and Ohio SPCA volunteers worked all day in order to prepare the farm sanctuary for new lines of fence. They removed hundreds of feet of old fence and bush hogged fence lines. Additionally, they hauled all old fence, gates, and posts off the property. 4100 feet of new fence and 12 gates will be installed starting August 23. We love these students and volunteers. They worked so hard to help the animals. Thank you! You guys rock!

The Ohio SPCA cares for many special needs animals on our farm animal sanctuary. Their veterinary care, supplements, and special food requirements are expensive. We need your help. All monetary donations are tax-deductible. Every dollar makes a difference in an animal’s life.

Meet some of our special needs animals:

Simon is a senior feline with heart disease. He also has a nasal abnormality as a result of his condition when rescued. Simon was rescued from a horrible hoarding situation in southern Ohio. It took 6 months to get him well.

Jake and Jerrod are senior goats with CAE and CL (goat diseases that cannot be cured). They require medication at times and special supplements and feed. They are two of the sweetest goats you could ever meet. Both are much loved farm favorites.

Poody – Poody was rescued from a family who no longer wanted her. Her father did not fair as well, as he was taken out on a country road and dumped. She has Cushing’s Disease in addition to having hypothyroidism and high blood pressure. Despite her medical problems, at nine years old Poody is active and happy. She will remain on the Ohio SPCA Farm Animal Sanctuary for the remainder of her life. Her care is costly.

Lily – Rescued from a puppy mill, Lily had one eye ripped out by another dog. The remaining eye had been ruptured for years & she had suffered for a long time. It had to be removed. Lily also had skin & ear infections, & curled nails. She is now 14 & has some cervical degeneration, arthritis in the neck, and heart disease. She is a sanctuary favorite & much loved by all. Donations are desperately needed to help provide for Lily and many others.

Angel – Angel is just precious. She was part of over 100 animals seized in a cruelty case. Her hooves were severely overgrown and she was walking on her knees. Additionally, she had skin parasites and had lost a lot of her fur. This girl can now run, but she has good and bad days due to years of abuse and the onset of arthritis.

Harley and Nikki – Harley and Nikki – saved from the Mercer County Dog Pound when they were using engine exhaust to kill. They were adopted out, but Harley would not eat for his new owner. Nikki is a compulsive licker and Harley has had surgery twice for a bladder stones. Both are seniors and will remain on the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

Blue Belle – Blue Belle is a yearling Alpine. Her owner was going to euthanize her because she has CAE (goat arthritis). Blue Belle is safe with the Ohio SPCA for the rest of her life.

Gimpy – Gimpy was one of 250 goats seized in 2005. One of his legs had been broken and was never repaired. He walks with a limp, but manages to stay with the herd.

Benefit Run June 13, 2010 – The weather worked against us. However, many bikers still rode. The day turned out to be beautiful, and a great time was had by everyone! Sunday, June 13 – Plan for a full day of riding and entertainment while helping the Ohio SPCA!

The benefit will begin at Tee Jaye’s – 1601 N. Memorial Drive, Lancaster,OH in their parking lot. Come early and enjoy breakfast! All vehicles are welcome – 2 wheels or 4!

We will start collecting ride donations at 10:00 a.m. $20/single rider…$30/double. Kickstands up at 11:00am. The ride will be on scenic county roads with various stops along the way.

The ride will wrap up with the final stop at the Lancaster Moose Lodge-1201 Sugar Grove Rd in Lancaster. There will be aDJ providing entertainment. Food and beverages will be provided for all ride participants. There will be a 50-50 drawing and door prizes. Ride t-shirts will also be available for purchase.

The Ohio SPCA’s emergency medical funds have been depleted. ALL of the money raised through the benefit will be used for immediate needs. This event was sponsored by the Animal Rights Club. These young people did an awesome job of speaking for the Ohio SPCA and the animals. A total of $1,061.00was raised. Staff and students had a great time. Coach Brian Schoonover who was in first place asked Chipolte to donate burritos, so he could throw senior Aaron England, and Donis Toler, Principal, under the bus. Coach Schoonover and his accomplice, Kelli DelGuzzo, raised $316.00! Principal Toler came in first place and had to kiss Henry on the face. Students screamed from the bleachers and made Mr. Toler kiss Henry three times! Aaron, second in line, had to kiss Henry’s behind. Henry could have cared less about his surroundings, as he was busy eating grass on the football field and leaving droppings on the track. A picture of Principal Toler kissing Henry was the Photo of the Day in the Columbus Dispatch on May 15. A huge THANK YOU to a great group of caring students and staff!

April 2010 – When the Ohio SPCA received a call regarding over 50 cats needing to be removed from a residential property in Logan County, Ohio, we knew help would be needed from multiple animal organizations. Obtaining help is not easily done, as the cat overpopulation in Ohio is heartbreaking and animal shelters everywhere are at full capacity. In this situation, the cats were being well-cared for, but neighbors were complaining.

The Ohio SPCA has been working on a hoarding case in Lawrence County. The owners were found guilty of animal cruelty and ordered to work with the Ohio SPCA in an effort to re-home the dogs. Over 40 dogs have been removed with the help of several no-kill rescues. The dogs are in good shape, but have been breeding and living in crowded pens with inadequate shelter on a muddy hillside and in freezing temperatures. On Thursday, January 14, the Rascal Unit will be on site with volunteers from the Ohio SPCA, Tomorrow’s Hope, and Stormy’s Place in order to remove the remaining 25 dogs. Dr. Gonzalez with the Rascal Unit will be spaying and neutering and vaccinating all of the dogs. Several dogs are going to a rescue, but the remainder must be boarded at kennels. Donations are needed to pay for boarding and food.
