On Saturday, the 6th of March at 4:30 p.m., an eight year old yellow Labrador Retriever named Callaway was shot directly in the head by an officer from the Westlake Police Department. Callaway died shortly after at Westpark Animal Hospital. Westlake is located within fifteen minutes of Cleveland, Ohio.
The dog merely opened the door of his house which caused the alarm system to go off. His owner, a prominent Westlake doctor was at church at the time. Callaway was outside when a police officer arrived. At all times he remained within the perimeter of his own yard. The dog was confined by an invisible fence. A gate was also in the backyard where the officer could have stayed behind. According to Callaway’s owner/guardian, at no time was the dog within four feet of the officer. Upon the officer entering the backyard of the home, Callaway proceeded to bark. At this time, the officer drew his gun and shot a bullet into the dog’s head.
The following are the gentlemen who run and operate the city of Westlake. Collectively, the eight gentlemen have served a total of 105 years, averaging 13 years per councilman and/or mayor. The city has been under fire in the past for their treatment of stray or feral animals. The city’s animal warden is a trapper by trade and owns and operates a gas chamber in his backyard. This city needs to be held accountable for the animals residing within its boundaries. The violence must stop!
